Eleanor breaks into a bookshop to commit suicide but the books aren't ready to let her go just yet.

A short summary of your project

I'm raising money to help fund the creation of my short film, 'Alive'. The film follows Eleanor, mid 30s, who suffers from depression and has gotten to the point where she does not want to live anymore. She wants to be somewhere that gives her calm for her last moments, so breaks into a bookshop. However, the books aren't ready to let her go just yet, giving her hope that there's others out there looking out for us at our darkest times, and to search for the light when we feel like there is none.

Who are you?

I am an MA student of Scriptwriting at Bath Spa and as part of my course I need to create a piece to showcase for my final assessment. I wish to take this film further than the university and submit to film festivals and literary festivals. I am a professional photographer and my love for visuals translates vividly in my writing style.

Your story

As someone who has been tackling their own mental health for a number of years, I have found many ways to bring light into dark moments, and one of the most powerful is literature. Not only can we escape our thoughts by being drawn into a different world, but we can find answers to ourselves through all types of literature.

I feel that now is the right time to create my film, with the open discussions on mental health that are taking place not only personally but in the community and higher. I want people to understand that even in the lowest moments, there is a way to find hope, and I want to show the positive effects of books on mental health.

I believe this film will open more conversations to creating greater support for anyone suffering with mental health issues, and I believe that donating to the film will help to support this discussion taking place in a creative space.

Where will the money go?

  • My minimum target will go towards expenses and securing equipment and locations.
  • If I hit my full target, this will bring me closer to being able to compensate the cast and crew involved in the process, and secure strong musical composition which will be an integral part of telling the story.
  • My budget for the film is £11000, so anything over £5000 will just bring me closer to being able to fully compensate everyone involved.
  • I will be providing regular updates on the progress of pre-production, including introductions to cast and crew already on board and more about their work.

A breakdown of the costs includes paying crew the living wage and cast their equity wage, securing equipment hire, location fees, travel expenses, and post production such as sound design, editor and colour grader. All money raised helps us all to secure the equipment, location and experience needed to create a beautiful short film that can be of a standard that can be circulated to film festivals and give the story a chance to create a more open conversation about mental health.

Rewards

Where possible, all rewards will be digital, to provide a more swift delivery of rewards when the campaign ends and production has wrapped.

Help us succeed!

You don't need to give money to help the film succeed. It would be fantastic for the project to be shared to whoever you think may want to donate and get the film a wider audience. The more you share, the more likely it is that the film will become more and more brilliant.

We would love your help and support and look forward to getting ready for production!
